INTERVIEW by ZAK SLOMAN

Inspired by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Stone Cherry, and Guns N’ Roses, emerging Kent four-piece Gallows Circus play a gritty brand of blues rock, full of catchy riffs, strong rhythms, and a melodic vocal delivery.

Towards the end of last year, the band released a self-titled debut EP to critical acclaim, and an enthusiastic reception from their rapidly-expanding fan base, who have also been impressed by the quartet’s memorable stage presence.

With a new single coming out later this month, the collective’s frontman, Ian Day, spoke to me about what can be expected from that, as well as the great year him and his band mates have had.

How did the band form?

I decided to have a break from playing in bands, so I went travelling for a year. At one point, I was living off busking and realised how much I missed it.

I then made the decision to start something new when I got home, so I contacted Jim and Steve to see if they were up for a jam when I got back. Steve brought Rich along, and in a short space of time, we had some tracks with real potential!

How did the name Gallows Circus come about?

Well, I was telling Jim how I’d always liked referring to entertainment as “the circus“, and if only we could get the word “gallows” to somehow go with it.

Anyway, he was like, “How about Gallows Circus?… I’m not sure how we didn’t spot that straight away! (laughs)

What would you say was your approach to songwriting?

The majority of the time, Jim will come to rehearsal with some new riff ideas, then we’ll jam out the different sections, then I’ll sing some nonsense lyrics over it until I’ve found a melody that I like, and then I take it away, and see where the lyrics want to take me.

Other times, we might experiment with something totally different to see what happens!

What inspires the band lyrically?

Things that happen in my life, or things that I’m thinking about at the time.

Towards the end of last year, you brought out your self-titled debut EP
to an enthusiastic reception and critical acclaim. Honestly, were you
expecting that type of response at all?

No, not at all! We literally wrote those songs as a means to get to know each other musically. We recorded them just so we had some songs to show venues to get some shows, and to help us spread the word, but people seem to really dig those tracks, so that’s super cool!

Later this month, the band will be unveiling a new single, entitled ‘Faith To
Believe’. How has the recording process been for that?

Fantastic! It was pretty straightforward really, as we had such a clear picture of how the song should sound, so it just kind of fell into place.

And how will the single differ from the debut EP?

I’d say it’s slightly heavier that some of our other songs, and it will definitely make your chin grow! (laughs)

Also, will ‘Faith To Believe’ eventually led to another EP or an album
release at all?

We have other songs, but at the moment, we haven’t made our minds up on how or what to release next. EP, album, or more singles…it’s a tough decision.

The band have moved crowds across the UK with live shows that are gritty
and memorable. How is performing for stage as an experience for you all?

That’s what we do it for! We totally love performing live. When you see other people singing your lyrics back at you…that’s a great moment!

Single aside, what are your plans for the near future?

To get more songs released in 2019, to get on the bills of some cool festivals, and to really grow our social media.

And finally, what is the band’s long-term aim?

To make this our full-time career, and to play our songs to as many people as possible!

EMERGING BLUES ROCKERS GALLOWS CIRCUS ANNOUNCE SINGLE RELEASE

Faintly tipping their hats to past rock masters, Gallows Circus have crafted a sound that calls upon the passion of Free, fortified by the snarly riffery of Guns N’ Roses, and the emerging Kent quartet will be releasing their blistering brand new single, ‘Faith To Believe’, via all platforms on Friday 30th November.

Gallows Circus formed last year, and ever since, they have been making new friends and picking up fans right across the country. The talented dirty-blues rockers dropped their self-titled debut EP last year, notching up a tidal wave of support from the underground.

The four-piece have built on these steady foundations, and have created a live set that has been famed for its infectious groove, fiery spirit, and full-hearted execution.

Gallows Circus will now soon deliver their explosive new single, ‘Faith to Believe’. This absolute firecracker of a track was recorded at Squarehead Studios, and mixed at Outhouse Studios, and it’s destined to hit radio airwaves over the coming weeks.

Vocalist and harmonica player, Ian Day, talks about the single: “It is a song about struggling whether to put your faith in your instincts or to go with other people’s accepted ideals, being unsure if you’re letting your past influence your decisions, and seeking answers from others when you already know the path to take.

Following on from the new single, the band have a series of further singles and videos lined up throughout 2019, along with major festival plans. Stay tuned to the band’s Facebook and other social sites for updates and show announcements.
