Armed with an intense, fast-paced hardcore/mathcore sound that is effective both live and on record, emerging duo Death Goals have been making waves on London’s underground rock and metal scene this past year.

Having brought out a single entitled ‘Stacyletmeseeyourstegosaurus’ last month, the band will be hoping to broaden their reach this July with the release of a self-titled debut EP.

Frontman Harry Bailey recently spoke to me about that, as well as the two-piece’s origins, songwriting approach, and more.

How did the band form?

We formed in April last year, whilst at uni together. My old band was disbanding, and I wanted to form a gross hardcore band, so I jumped on Will, as I knew he was into those vibes, and we’ve been making noise ever since.

How did the name Death Goals come about?

I just got a big old name of potential band names off my phone, and Death Goals was one that I kept coming back to.

For those who have yet to listen to the band’s music, how would you describe it to them?

We like the tagline of “two boys making noise“, because we feel that sums up our sound nicely. Loud, noisy, chaotic madness.

What would you say was your approach to songwriting?

Most of the songs come from me bringing a riff or an idea to rehearsal, or sometimes a whole song, and then us jamming it, chopping and changing, fairly standard stuff.

What inspires the band lyrically?

Um all kinds of things, most of our upcoming debut EP is about my past relationships, but the lyrics also touch on the mass incidents of inappropriate conduct within the hardcore and alternative scene, as well as things that keep me up at night, like existential dread and stuff.

Speaking of the self-titled debut EP, which will be coming out this July, how has the recording process been for that?

The recording process was brilliant. We recorded the whole thing live in one day at London Road Studios in Baldock, Hertfordshire. We did that because we wanted to capture the frantic energy of our live shows, and I feel we’ve certainly done that.

And what can be expected of the EP?

Short songs, breakdowns, and yelping.

The band have already played such London venues as The Black Heart and The Unicorn, as well as supporting the likes of Gutlocker and As Everything Unfolds. How is the experience, for you both, of playing live?

It’s the whole reason we formed the band. We booked our first show after our second or third rehearsal when we had only three or four songs!

However, playing live is everything for us, seeing the looks of horror on people’s faces as I’m running around or throwing guitars at Will or wrapping microphones around people is so funny.

Shout out to As Everything Unfolds, though, they’re ace!

What else do you have planned for the near future?

Hopefully some super cool music videos for the EP, and we’re working on the ideas for them currently!

And finally, what is the band’s long-term aim?

To make falling over whilst holding a guitar a legitimate form of music.

THE SELF-TITLED DEBUT EP FROM DEATH GOALS WILL BE RELEASED ON JULY 20.
