ANONYMOUS – ‘What You Deserve’ (4/5)

I first came across Anonymous, a hard rock outfit from Staffordshire, in the summer of 2014, when I saw them perform a set at a pub in their home town of Uttoxeter.

Seeing them play convinced me at the time that the band were not just four teenage boys messing around and having a laugh, that in fact they were actually taking everything seriously, which was best reflected in their well-crafted, mature sound.

Almost three years, a positively-received self-titled debut and lots of universally acclaimed live shows later, they have unleashed on the public their second EP ‘What You Deserve’.

The basic elements of their music remain unchanged, with a sound still firmly rooted in classic rock, containing heavy vocals, soaring guitar riffs and anthemic chrouses.

What is different with this though is that they have used these and enhanced them, which is a good reflection of how they have evolved as people and as a band in the time from the release of their debut to now.

Frontman Rob Baynes’s vocal delivery is evidently stronger, perfectly getting the right balance of substantial and melodic, with the riffs of both guitarist Hayden Kirk and bassist Luke Lawley, as well as the drumming of Steven ‘Herbie’ Herbert, showing more confidence, energy and better displaying their immense talents.

When I recently chatted with them, the band said they were given greater creative control in recording the EP, this could have backfired terribly, especially for an outfit yet to release a full-length album, but with the maturity, intelligence and talent each member possesses, there was no danger of that happening.

With more freedom this time around, it is clear from listening to every one of the four tracks that they have grasped this opportunity with both hands and have made something that lets them and their music truly shine.

In conclusion, ‘What You Deserve’ is a solid second offering from Anonymous, and is also further confirmation for me that they are a band that won’t fade away any time soon, and are destined for even bigger things in the near future.

TOP TRACK: ‘What You Deserve’

A lot has happened to Staffordshire hard rock quartet Anonymous since I interviewed them at the beginning of last year.

Their fan base has grown rapidly, their sound has further developed, and they have grown as a band.

An indication of how far they have come in these past twelve months is with their recently released EP ‘What You Deserve’, the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to their self-titled debut.

With the EP so far getting an overwhelmingly positive response, and having just completed a nationwide tour, I caught up with them and they told me about the new release in further detail.

How is your recently released EP ‘What You Deserve’ different from your debut?

The production and general feel of the two releases separates them. We went for more of a modern-day approach with ‘What You Deserve’, adding more triggering in the drums, a few layers of guitar overdubs and, something we’ve worked on a lot recently, more complex vocal harmonies and layering. Whereas with our self-titled EP, the recording process itself was very much live, the four of us in a room playing our instruments and parts to each other as we would on stage.

How did the band get the idea for the EP?

We were always going to start on another EP as soon as we could after the first. The main question was actually what to title it, as we already had an array of tracks written and ready to record, the sharpest of which appear on ‘What You Deserve’. The title came about because each song had a different feel in regards to the lyrical content, but a similar underlying theme. We basically decided to name it after what we considered the most powerful song of the four.

How was the recording process?

In comparison to the first EP, this one felt like we had more control, we weren’t too restricted by a timeframe or looming deadlines, allowing total creative control to change and re-arrange when it came to tracking the parts.

The bulk of the recording was done at The University of Derby in mid 2016. We took a different approach by laying down guitar and vocal guide tracks prior to going into the studio, ready for the drums to be recorded as soon as we were in the studio. On paper, this was a good idea, but in the end we preferred us all being in the room together to lay down the guide tracks.

What do you hope to get from ‘What You Deserve’?

We’re finishing up our tour to promote the EP currently, we’d just like to continue to add more gigs to the calendar and gain more followers by doing so! We’d like to think it will open more avenues in terms of playing bigger shows, larger venues and hopefully touring again.

What can the band’s fans expect as well?

From our latest EP? A clearer, more refined representation of Anonymous in comparison to our last EP; riffs, beats and grooves reaching out and hitting you right in the face like a big, meaty, cleanly produced fist!

From one of our live shows? Four guys pouring all of their energy into the tightest possible sound they can get, and going absolutely nuts whilst doing so.

Was it easier or more difficult this time around to put it all together?

Seeing as we took a more independent approach this time around, we’d say it’s been harder. There have been retrospectively minor complications with the EP, which have made things harder. In short, at times it’s felt as if we’d never get the EP out, but it’s been a learning curve for us all after getting our heads down and ploughing through it.

How has the reaction been to the EP so far?

It’s been very positive, the recent tour has helped push both the band and the EP a great deal. We hope for bigger things in the future, but right now, we’re very happy with how things have panned out, and with all of the support we’ve received from everyone involved with the band, and our fan base, in short, thanks!
