DOWNCAST

INTERVIEW by ZAK SLOMAN

Newcomers Downcast may have only just released their debut single, but already, the trio are being tipped for big things with an engaging, heartfelt, and melodic pop-punk sound.

With a self-titled debut EP all set for release in the new year, frontman Liam Edwards told me more what their growing fan base can expect from it, the band themselves, and what they have lined up between now and then.

How did the band form?

We’ve been writing songs together for a while, and after demoing some material that we were really happy with, we decided we wanted to take it further and take it into the studio. We worked to put everything in place from there and make Downcast an actual band.

How did the name Downcast come about?

It means low in spirits, which well represents the meanings behind the lyrical content of our songs.

What would you say was your songwriting approach?

Usually, I’ll come up with some lyrics and have some ideas for vocal melodies. Ben will usually then come up with some guitar parts, and we’ll begin to demo it and add layers of ideas on top until we’re happy.

What inspires the band lyrically?

I usually write about things that I’m going through in the moment of writing, or things that have happened in the past.

You recently unveiled their first single, entitled ‘Anthurium’. How has the reaction been to that so far?

People seem to really like it! It’s not even the best song on the EP though, so I’m excited to see the response to the next two singles.

And that track was taken from the band’s self-titled debut EP, coming out in the new year. How has the recording process been for that?

It was really fun! Ian Sadler’s great to work with, and he brought a lot of interesting ideas to the table.

And what can be expected from the EP?

It’s quite diverse, and it’s not your typical pop-punk record.

What are your plans between now and when the EP is released?

We have two music videos to release, and you’ll see a UK tour announcement too.

And finally, what is the band’s long-term aim?

We just want to take it as far as we can by playing as many places as possible, and to keep putting out music that we enjoy writing.
