Just About Done are a four-piece from the Australian city of Melbourne, with an ambition to bring the art back into music with a hard-hitting pop-punk sound rather akin to early Paramore and The Story So Far.
Having so far released two positively-received EPs, the band will be unveiling a third, entitled ‘I Am Getting By’, later this month, which will see them make a shift towards a more conceptual songwriting approach, and to tell us more about the quartet’s upcoming offering was their frontwoman, Sam McGee.
How did the band get together?
We were a high school band initially, but since then, we have had a lot of line-up changes, so it’s a bit of a mix!
How did the name Just About Done come about?
Named after the Blink-182 song, ‘Just About Done’. We were really into Blink in the early stages of the band.
What would you say was your songwriting approach?
It is almost always the guys writing instrumental lines or sections, and me adding lyrics on top. I always write my lyrics and melody together while we are in a rehearsal session. We are very collaborative writers, though all have our own strengths in the writing process.
What inspires the band lyrically?
Usually, my personal experiences inspire the lyrics. However, other experiences the other band members go through can also come into play. We are such close friends that it’s quite easy to do so.
Later this month, you will be bringing out your third EP, ‘I Am Getting By’. How has the recording process been for that?
The recording process was great. We worked with a new producer, Chris Vernon, for this, so naturally, it has a different sound to our previous recordings.
We took four days to record the tracks, and ensured we had enough time to go back over and add/remove anything that would improve our recordings. The first three days comprised of us recording guitars, bass and vocals, with the last day being spent in the drum studio.
And how will the upcoming release differ from the work the band have put out up to now?
Most obviously, we have a three-part narrative to accompany the release. The tracks really have a strong story behind them. Musically, we have a more mature sound, and a more personal meaning behind our work.
How is the overall live experience for all of you?
We absolutely love playing live. We really put a lot of effort into our live performance, to make it enjoyable for others, but also ourselves.
What are the band’s plans following the unveiling of the EP?
We have something planned, but nothing announced yet! Make sure to keep your eyes peeled!
And finally, what is your long-term aim?
We want to be able to play music full-time, to meet loads of new people, and other artists. We want to be at a stage where Just About Done takes us to new places!
‘I AM GETTING BY’, THE THIRD EP BY JUST ABOUT DONE, WILL BE RELEASED ON OCTOBER 19.
