INTERVIEW by ZAK SLOMAN

Back in 2011, when Norwegian hardcore outfit Like Rats From A Sinking Ship decided to call it a day, two members of that band, Timo Silvola and Tony Gonzalez, immediately began to collaborate on a new musical project.

Calling themselves Barren Womb, the duo spent a couple of years touring the European underground scene, impressing many with their heavy noise rock sound, minimalistic approach, defiant experimentation, and powerful guitar riffs.

This soon got the attention of Seattle indie label Spartan Records, who signed them up to a recording contract.

Since then, the two-piece have toured the US, played with such outfits as Entombed A.D and Lord Dying, and brought out a number of EPs and albums, all to high critical praise.

Having recently released third album, ‘Old Money/ New Lows’, the guys took some time out from their current European headline tour to tell me all about it, as well as a whole host of other things.

How did the band form?

After our former band fell apart some time in 2011, we decided to proceed as a two-piece from then on. it’s been an incredible journey so far, nothing but good times!

How did the name Barren Womb come about?

The name is meant as social commentary, how the state of the world today stunts growth and positive evolution. As a species, it feels like we’re currently creating a cesspool, a pitch black death crown for all to wear.

What would you say was your approach to songwriting?

As songwriters, we would say we try to keep things fairly economical, nothing too fancy, unless it’s absolutely necessary. We’re not here to show off, other bands are way better at that than us. Whatever serves the song and produces the highest amount of goosebumps, that is where we’ll go.

What inspires the band lyrically?

We pull inspiration from just about anything: loved ones, books, politics, Rick & Morty, nature, bad jokes, other bands, travelling, the list goes on. The lyrics tend to land on the dark side of things, with just a smidge of hope for good measure.

Last month, you brought out your third album, ‘Old Money/New Lows’. How was the recording process for that?

It was an extremely relaxed and pleasant session. Like our previous album, this one was recorded with our good friend Håkon Gebhardt at Das Boot Studio in Trondheim, Norway. We had just enough time to experiment with some sounds, but too little time to start second guessing ourselves.

Personally, I think it’s the best we’ve ever sounded on tape, but sadly, it was the last album recorded at that location since Håkon has now moved the studio to Florence, Italy.

And so far, the album has had very good reviews. You must be quite pleased with that.

We’re really happy and overwhelmed with the feedback we’ve gotten so far! We couldn’t be more pleased.

In 2015, the band toured the US with Connecticut noise rock trio Grizzlor. How was the experience, for both of you, of touring Stateside?

That was a real trip! In many ways, it was different to touring Europe, but a very rewarding experience. We got to see the American underground, for better or for worse, and we would do it again in a heartbeat! Grizzlor are a face-meltingly good band, and great people to boot.

You’re currently on a headline European tour. How has that been going so far?

The shows so far have been wonderful! Good crowds and awesome vibes. We had a fire in a speaker cabinet on the very first gig, and we almost burned the place to the ground, but that’s all part of the job.

I’ve noticed that the band are yet to play in the UK. Are a few British dates something you will be looking at doing on future tours?

This is an error we mean to correct on this record. Plans are being made…

What are your plans for when the current tour has been completed?

More touring. We have a few festival shows booked for this summer, which should be a ton of fun. After that, we’ll hit the road again with a vengeance.
