INTERVIEW by ZAK SLOMAN
Fero Lux are a post-hardcore/mathcore four-piece from southern Florida.
Since their formation in 2010, they have toured all over the States, building up a loyal fan base with a thrashy sound coupled with politically charged lyrics, which has resulted in them being likened to bands such as Glassjaw and The Dillinger Escape Plan.
With their latest album ‘No Rest’ enjoying rave reviews, and also embarking on a tour of the American west coast with newly reformed mathcore legends The Number Twelve Looks Like You early next year, it was time to have a chat with them about all things Fero Lux.
How did the band get together?
I was lying on the grass on Sunday morning of last week, indulging in my self-defeat.
My mind was thugged, all laced and bugged, all twisted wrong and beat.
A comfortable three feet deep.
How did the name Fero Lux come about?
My friend said I could use it, and she took it from some occult type reference.
How would you describe your sound?
Imagine a delicious vegan mac and cheese. Scary at first, but delicious when you get to know it.
What are the band’s musical influences?
Shitty Deepak Chopra quotes that inherently make no sense, and At The Drive-In, Coalesce, Botch, Glassjaw etc…
What is your approach to songwriting?
What will we enjoy playing live, and how we can express our feelings in a somewhat complex movement that eventually gives way to a raw, more simple bit of rage, doesn’t have to stay, doesn’t have to go, and a lot of arrangement is by feel.
Where does the inspiration come from for the band’s lyrics?
Primarily, this terrible Earth, which is full of pieces of shit, and also trying to better ourselves by operating on compassion and evidence.
What’s your experience of playing live?
I’d like to think we are as genuine as can be. We’re not concerned with what anyone likes, but being as real and in the moment as possible.
I think it inspires people in a non-musical way, but that’s my opinion.
What has the band got lined up in the near future?
Man oh man oh man, if terries were to come up in here?
We have a new video for our song “Double Ghost” and we will be touring with the Number Twelve Looks Like You for their west coast run of the U.S.!!
What’s your long-term aim?
To wheeze the juice as much as possible, and tour forever.
